The Ponderosa Lemon tree is a great plant for the indoors although it does not like full sun or air drafts. If grown in the northern climates, grow lights are an excellent source of light. The tree should be planted in a light soil mix of peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite. It should also have good drainage and needs to be watered every few weeks. Allow the soil to dry out between watering as the roots will rot if left sitting in water. The tree will not grow larger than 8 feet if planted in a container. The fruit is well worth the inconvenience of the thorns that this tree produces.
Pondersora Lemons trees are cold hardy in USDA Growing Zones 9-11. They can be grown as a container plant in all other growing zones if brought indoors for the winter. The tree loves heat and will blossom if kept in temperatures of 80 to 90 degrees. Mist the leaves with a water daily to provide the humidity these trees love. The lemon blossoms of the Ponderosa Lemon Tree have a very sweet fragrance. The Ponderosa Lemon blossoms need to be pollinated by hand. To pollinate, use a small paint brush and rub the pollen within the flower. The fruit will ripen in approximately 6 to 9 months.
